Chapter 15 - The Drive to the Bank

The cemetery wind moved mournfully through the ancient oak trees, rustling the Spanish moss. Nobody spoke. The revelation hung in the air like a guillotine blade.

Vanessa turned her head slowly, looking at her father with a horrified expression. “Daddy? What is she talking about?”

Richard’s face did not change, but a muscle ticked violently in his jaw. “That bank has clearly made a clerical error. I was accessing my own corporate boxes.”

Dana Wilkes’s voice echoed from the phone. “We have high-definition camera footage and signed security denial forms bearing your signature, Mr. Vale.”

Mr. Pierce spoke up softly. “Thank you for the update, Ms. Wilkes. Ms. Carter and I will be there within the hour to claim the contents.” I ended the call.

Richard stepped so close to me I could smell the mint on his breath. His voice dropped so low that only I could hear the raw malice in it.

“You open that box, Emily, and I swear to God you will regret it for the rest of your miserable life.”

I looked past him, down at my mother’s freshly dug grave. The dark earth. The pristine white roses scattered on top. A vibrant, beautiful life deliberately reduced to chaotic paperwork because the people closest to her had made the truth too dangerous to speak out loud.

Then I looked back at him, feeling absolutely nothing but resolve.

“I already regret waiting this long.”

The bank was located exactly ten minutes from the cemetery gates. By the time Mr. Pierce and I arrived in his car, Richard had frantically called his own lawyer. Vanessa, seeking validation, had already posted a tearful, highly edited video on her social media, ensuring my name was being dragged through the mud in every local Facebook group.

I typed a single word in reply: Watch.
