Chapter 14 - The Unholy Alliance

The siren continued to blare through the ceiling speakers. The white gas was beginning to thin out as the hospital's automated emergency scrubbers kicked in.
Down the hall, the heavy sound of approaching police boots echoed off the concrete walls.
"POLICE! CLEAR THE FLOOR!"
Emily looked toward the door, then back down at me. The gun barrel rested lightly against my forehead, the cold steel radiating terror.
"You want him to suffer?" Emily whispered softly, her face inches from mine.
"I want him to burn," I choked out with every ounce of hatred remaining in my soul. "I want him to pay for what he did to both of us."
Slowly, Emily lowered the gun.
She reached into her blue scrub pocket, pulled out a small, glass vial filled with a clear liquid, and set it on the tray table beside my IV line.
"That's the paralytic Margaret used to keep me sedated in the cellar for four years," Emily whispered, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp command. "Ethan thinks I'm dead. He thinks I'm a hallucination. He's sitting in Interrogation Room 3 at the central precinct right now, waiting for his lawyers."
"What are you going to do?" I asked, my heart pounding violently.
"I'm going to finish the story," Emily said, pulling her surgical mask back over her face. "And you are going to give me my alibi."
Before I could answer, Emily leaned over, grabbed Detective Mason by his collar, and dragged his unconscious body into the corner of the room, positioning him as if he had been knocked out during a struggle with an unknown intruder.
Then she vanished through the emergency exit door just as three tactical officers burst into the room with rifles drawn!
"SECURE THE ROOM! WE HAVE A PATIENT DOWN!"
Detective Mason groaned on the floor, stirring back to consciousness, rubbing his temple as the officers pulled him to his feet.
"Claire!" Mason gasped, rushing to my bedside, his eyes wild with panic. "Did she hurt you?! Where is she?!"

I looked at Detective Mason. Then I looked at the glass vial sitting discreetly behind the flower vase on my tray table.
"She went down the service stairs," I lied smoothly, looking Mason dead in the eye. "She tried to kill me, but she ran when she heard your backup coming."
