Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Circle

Dante froze. The tenderness in the air evaporated instantly, replaced by the rigid tension of a commander on a battlefield.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out the rugged black satellite handset, and thumbed the speaker button.

"Report," Dante said.

Static hissed through the speaker, followed by the frantic, panicked voice of Carlo, his second-in-command back in Manhattan.

*"Boss! Boss, thank God the line cleared!"* Carlo gasped, the sound of blaring sirens and chaotic shouting audible in the background. *"Where are you? We lost your tracker six hours ago!"*

"I’m in Amalfi. Caterina’s play failed. Silvio is finished," Dante said sharply. "What's happening in New York, Carlo?"

*"It's not Silvio, boss!"* Carlo shouted over the static. *"It’s the Commission! Two hours ago, federal agents raided the docks in Brooklyn, the corporate offices in Manhattan, and the penthouse! Every asset tied to the Moretti trust is being frozen under a federal RICO indictment!"*

Dante’s jaw tightened, but his voice remained steady. "That's impossible. We’ve had the Southern District judges bought off for ten years. Who signed the warrants?"

*"That's the nightmare, Don Moretti,"* Carlo’s voice cracked with pure terror. *"It wasn't a federal prosecutor. It was a sealed affidavit submitted by a confidential informant who turned over the master ledgers—the ones from twenty years ago. The ones your father buried."*

I looked at Dante, feeling the temperature in the cave plummet.

"Who had access to my father's private ledgers, Carlo?" Dante demanded, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Silvio didn't have them. My mother didn't have the codes."

There was a long, excruciating pause on the other end of the line. The static surged, crackling like dry timber before Carlo spoke the words that stopped my heart.

*"The informant wasn't one of ours, Dante... It was Elena’s father."*

The cave seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"What?" The word tore from my throat before I could stop it. I lunged toward the radio. "That's a lie! My father has been dead for five years! He died of a heart attack in an emergency room in Queens!"

*"Elena?"* Carlo’s voice sounded stunned to hear me on the line. *"Elena, listen to me... your father's body was never in that grave. The federal marshals just unsealed a witness protection file from 2019. Anthony Vance—your father—faked his death with the help of the FBI. He’s alive. He's standing on the steps of the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan right now, flanked by fifty federal marshals, giving a press conference."*

The silence that followed was suffocating.

The phone slipped from Dante’s fingers, clattering onto the damp pebbles of the cave floor, Carlo’s frantic voice still squawking faintly into the dark.

I stood frozen, staring at the phone, my entire reality fracturing into jagged shards.

My father. The gentle, quiet man who smelled of motor oil and peppermint. The man whose funeral I had wept at until my eyes bled. The man whose death had left me vulnerable enough to be pulled into Dante Moretti’s orbit in the first place.

He hadn't died. He had set this entire board in motion five years ago.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Dante turned his head to look at me.

The warmth that had softened his slate-gray eyes minutes ago was completely gone. In its place was a cold, calculating abyss—the mind of a mafia boss realizing that the woman standing before him, the woman wearing his five-carat diamond ring, might not be his salvation at all.

She might be the most elaborate, devastating Trojan horse ever built to destroy his empire.

"Elena," Dante whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all emotion.

"I didn't know," I choked out, taking a step back, my boots slipping on the wet rocks. "Dante, look at me! I swear on my life, I thought he was dead! I buried him!"

"You had the ledgers," Dante said, his voice flat, logical, terrifyingly calm. "In the kitchen. You told Giancarlo you audited the northern shipping routes. You said you had the offshore accounts encrypted on private servers."

"I was bluffing to save our lives!"

"Or," Dante said, stepping closer to me, his shadow swallowing the faint moonlight, his hand resting on the holster at his hip, "you've been working the long game from the very beginning. The dinner. The stolen necklace. Leaving the ring on the table so I would purge my own family and leave the throne completely exposed."

"Dante, no!" Tears of pure panic and betrayal stung my eyes. "Look at what we just survived! I fought beside you! I wore your ring!"

Outside the mouth of the cave, the sudden, rhythmic thrum of heavy helicopter blades tore through the night sky.

Spotlights cut through the darkness over the water, blindingly bright, sweeping across the mouth of the sea cave. Over a megaphone, a voice boomed in Italian and English, echoing off the high cliffs of Amalfi:

*"Dante Moretti! This is the Italian State Police cooperating with the United States Department of Justice! You are surrounded! Drop your weapons and step out onto the rocks with your hands visible!"*

Dante didn't look at the light.

He didn't draw his gun.

He simply looked down at my left hand, where the five-carat diamond burned under the blinding glare of the federal searchlights, a terrible, unreadable darkness settling over his face.

"Whose side are you on, Elena?" he whispered.

And before I could answer, the first flashbang detonated at the entrance of the cave.
