Chapter 16

Chapter 17: The Ribbon Cutting

The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue on the day The Sanctuary Village officially opened.

Hundreds of people were gathered in the central courtyard. There were politicians, journalists, and local community leaders, but the only people I cared about were sitting in the front row.

Alex was wearing a sharp suit, beaming with the kind of pride that could outshine the sun. Beside him, Elias held a massive bouquet of yellow roses. And right in the center sat Grace, now fifteen, holding a camera and taking pictures of everything.

I stepped up to the wooden podium. The microphone feedback hummed for a brief second before settling.

I looked out at the sprawling, beautiful community I had built. The townhomes were painted in warm, inviting colors. The playground was filled with sunlight. There were no dark corners. There were no marble floors.

"Fifteen years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice echoing across the courtyard, "I was told that my life was over. I was told that I was nothing without the walls that were built to contain me."

I looked down at Grace. She lowered her camera and smiled at me.

"But walls are just brick and mortar," I continued. "They only have the power we give them. When we decided to design The Sanctuary Village, we did not want to build a hiding place. We wanted to build a launching pad. We wanted to create an architecture of hope, where every survivor who walks through these gates knows that their story does not end with what was done to them."

I raised a pair of golden scissors.

"This village is dedicated to every person who has ever crawled through the dark to find the light," I declared. "Welcome home."

I cut the thick red ribbon.

The crowd erupted into massive, thunderous applause. Grace ran up to the stage and threw her arms around me, followed quickly by Elias and Alex. We stood together in the brilliant sunshine, an unbreakable family forged entirely out of choice and love.
