CHAPTER 14 — THE WOMAN WHO HAD NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE

CHAPTER 14 — THE WOMAN WHO HAD NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE
The lights went out.
Every door in Blackthorn Manor slammed shut at once.
For three seconds, there was complete darkness.
Then Evelyn heard a gun being cocked.
Not one.
Several.
She couldn't see them, but she could hear them.
Around the room.
Behind the walls.
Above them.
Gabriel had planned this.
Of course he had.
He had spent seventeen years planning everything.
The fire.
The disappearances.
The false identities.
The stolen money.
The three sisters.
The archive.
And now Blackthorn.
A voice came through the darkness.
“Put your weapons down.”
Nobody moved.
Gabriel laughed softly.
“You still don't understand, Evelyn.”
A red emergency light flickered on.
The room appeared in fragments.
Marcus stood near the fireplace.
Nathan was beside the library table.
Amelia had positioned herself between Evelyn and Isabelle.
Celeste was crouched behind a chair.
And Gabriel stood in the center of the room, completely calm.
Around him were six armed men.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“You knew we would come here.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother would return.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Nathan had the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew I'd release the archive.”
Gabriel smiled.
“That was the most important part.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What?”
“The archive was never supposed to remain hidden.”
She stared at him.
Gabriel continued.
“I needed you to release it.”
“Why?”
“Because once the information became public, every person connected to the old network began running.”
“And?”
“And frightened people make mistakes.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“You used me.”
“I used everyone.”
He looked toward Marcus.
“Your father.”
Then Nathan.
“Your husband.”
Then Isabelle.
“Your mother.”
Finally Amelia and Sophia.
“And your sisters.”
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
“You're proud of that?”
“No.”
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
“I'm alive because of it.”
Evelyn raised her weapon.
One of Gabriel's men immediately aimed at her.
Gabriel lifted his hand.
“Don't.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“You still think this is about revenge.”
“Isn't it?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Control.”
He pointed toward the floor.
“Everything beneath this house belongs to your family.”
Evelyn stared.
“The vault.”
“Yes.”
“The original ledger.”
“Yes.”
“The money.”
“Yes.”
Gabriel smiled.
“And the final archive.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“You want the archive.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I want what comes after it.”
“What?”
“The restitution fund.”
Evelyn laughed.
“You've spent seventeen years destroying people for money.”
“No.”
Gabriel's voice became cold.
“I spent seventeen years making sure nobody could use that money against me.”
“That sounds like money.”
“It is power.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You're afraid.”
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
“Of what?”
“Of losing control.”
For the first time, his expression changed.
Evelyn saw it.
Fear.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But real.
She smiled.
“You're afraid of me.”
Gabriel laughed.
“You should be afraid of me.”
“I was.”
Evelyn lowered her weapon slightly.
“Not anymore.”
Gabriel looked toward Isabelle.
“You raised her well.”
Isabelle's face was cold.
“No.”
“I did.”
Gabriel frowned.
“You?”
“I taught her how to survive.”
Gabriel smiled.
“And now she's going to die.”
Nathan moved.
One of Gabriel's men raised his weapon.
“Stop!”
Nathan froze.
Gabriel looked at him.
“You were always the sentimental one.”
Nathan stared.
“You're not taking her.”
Gabriel laughed.
“That's exactly why I sent you to her.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“What?”
Gabriel looked at Nathan.
“You thought Isabelle sent you.”
Nathan's face changed.
“She did.”
“She gave you the assignment.”
“Yes.”
“Because I wanted her to.”
Silence.
Evelyn looked at Nathan.
Nathan stared at Gabriel.
“You're lying.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“Your mother knew Nathan had been compromised.”
Isabelle's expression hardened.
“I suspected.”
“You knew.”
“I knew he was being watched.”
“And you still sent him.”
“Yes.”
Gabriel smiled.
“She thought she could use him against me.”
Evelyn looked at her mother.
“Could she?”
Isabelle nodded.
“That was the plan.”
Gabriel laughed.
“And it worked.”
Evelyn looked at Nathan.
“Then why did you become cruel?”
Nathan answered without hesitation.
“Because I was weak.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You used Victor.”
“Yes.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You used Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“You used her mother.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Everyone.”
Nathan's expression darkened.
“Not anymore.”
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
Nathan stepped forward.
“I know what you want.”
“Do you?”
“You want the vault.”
“Yes.”
“You want the names.”
“Yes.”
“You want the restitution money.”
“Yes.”
Nathan smiled.
“But you don't have the key.”
Gabriel's face changed.
Evelyn looked at Nathan.
“What key?”
Nathan reached into his coat.
He removed the small brass key marked V.
Gabriel's men immediately raised their weapons.
Gabriel stared.
“Give it to me.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
Gabriel took one step forward.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Nathan held up the key.
“You need all three daughters.”
Gabriel's eyes moved toward Amelia.
Then Sophia.
Then Evelyn.
“Yes.”
“You need Evelyn's pendant.”
“Yes.”
“You need Amelia's pendant.”
“Yes.”
“You need Sophia's memory.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Exactly.”
Nathan looked at him.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
“None of them trust you.”
Gabriel laughed.
“They don't have to.”
He snapped his fingers.
A large screen descended from the ceiling.
A video appeared.
Sophia.
She was tied to a chair.
Evelyn's heart stopped.
“Sophia!”
Gabriel smiled.
“She has been very difficult.”
Amelia stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Give me the pendant.”
Amelia froze.
“Which one?”
“The second.”
Amelia's hand moved instinctively toward her coat.
Evelyn saw it.
Gabriel saw it too.
“Now.”
Amelia pulled out the pendant.
Gabriel's men moved toward her.
Evelyn raised her weapon.
“Take one more step and I shoot.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You won't.”
“Try me.”
Gabriel stared at her.
“You're bluffing.”
Evelyn's voice was calm.
“No.”
She looked at Sophia on the screen.
Then at Gabriel.
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You assumed I still care what happens to me.”
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
Evelyn pointed the gun toward the floor.
“I already lost my husband.”
Nathan looked at her.
“I lost my father.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I lost my mother for seventeen years.”
Isabelle's eyes filled with tears.
“I lost my sister.”
Amelia stepped beside her.
“And I lost eleven years.”
Sophia's voice came through the speakers.
“And I lost my entire childhood.”
Gabriel stared at the screen.
Evelyn continued.
“I lost my home.”
“The money.”
“My reputation.”
“My marriage.”
“My family.”
She raised the gun.
“And now you think you're going to threaten me with losing something else?”
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“What are you saying?”
Evelyn smiled.
“I have nothing left to lose.”
Then she fired.
Not at Gabriel.
At the screen.
The monitor exploded.
The room fell silent.
Gabriel stared at the shattered glass.
Evelyn lowered her weapon.
“You can't threaten me with someone I already decided to save.”
Gabriel's face twisted with anger.
“Kill her.”
The gunmen raised their weapons.
Then the windows shattered.
Federal agents stormed the room.
Gunfire erupted.
Evelyn dropped behind the table.
Nathan pulled Isabelle to the floor.
Marcus tackled one of the attackers.
Amelia dragged Celeste toward the library.
The room became chaos.
Gabriel disappeared.
Evelyn saw him running toward the hidden passage.
She followed.
“Evelyn!”
Nathan shouted.
She ignored him.
Gabriel knew the tunnels.
So did she.
She ran down the stone staircase.
Past the old wine cellar.
Past the hidden room.
Past the shelves that had concealed the archive.
Gabriel disappeared around a corner.
Evelyn followed.
Then stopped.
The tunnel split into three directions.
She listened.
Footsteps.
Left.
She ran.
The passage opened into an underground chamber.
A massive steel door stood at the far end.
Gabriel was already there.
He inserted a key.
It didn't turn.
He tried again.
Nothing.
He looked down.
The brass key was gone.
Evelyn smiled.
Gabriel turned.
“How?”
“Nathan.”
Gabriel's face hardened.
“You trust him?”
“No.”
She raised her weapon.
“I trust myself.”
Gabriel laughed.
“You think you won?”
“No.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“I think you lost.”
Gabriel stared at her.
“You don't know what's behind this door.”
“I don't need to.”
“Yes, you do.”
He pointed at the steel vault.
“Your mother's entire life is inside.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“Then open it.”
“I can't.”
“Exactly.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Only your blood can open it.”
Evelyn looked at the door.
A small panel appeared.
She placed her hand against it.
A red light scanned her palm.
Then turned green.
The door opened.
Gabriel stared.
Evelyn looked inside.
Boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Gold bars.
Bank certificates.
And one small wooden box.
On top was a handwritten note.
FOR MY DAUGHTERS.
Evelyn picked it up.
Gabriel moved toward her.
“Give me that.”
Evelyn stepped backward.
“No.”
“That's mine.”
“It belongs to my mother.”
Gabriel's eyes darkened.
“Your mother stole everything from me.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“She destroyed my family.”
“No.”
“She betrayed us.”
“No.”
“She took the money.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Your family stole it first.”
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
She opened the wooden box.
Inside were three small envelopes.
One for Evelyn.
One for Amelia.
One for Sophia.
Evelyn's hands trembled.
Gabriel watched.
“What did she write?”
Evelyn opened hers.
Only one sentence.
THE WOMAN WHO HAS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE CANNOT BE BOUGHT.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Her mother had known.
She had known exactly what Evelyn would become.
Not a frightened daughter.
Not a wealthy heiress.
Not a wife.
Not someone's possession.
A woman who could no longer be controlled by fear.
Evelyn looked at Gabriel.
“You lost.”
Gabriel laughed.
“You think a letter changes anything?”
“No.”
Evelyn held up the envelope.
“This does.”
She pulled out a small memory card.
Gabriel's face went pale.
“What is that?”
“The final archive.”
His eyes widened.
“You don't have the key.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I don't need one.”
She turned the card over.
“Because my mother left the password with me.”
Gabriel stared.
“What password?”
Evelyn answered:
“Her daughters.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
Evelyn raised her weapon.
“Stop.”
He froze.
Then a voice came from behind him.
“Drop the gun.”
Nathan.
Gabriel slowly turned.
Nathan stood at the entrance.
Blood ran down his forehead.
His weapon was pointed directly at Gabriel.
Gabriel laughed.
“You came for her.”
“Yes.”
“You still love her.”
Nathan said nothing.
Gabriel smiled.
“Then kill me.”
Nathan's finger tightened.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Don't.”
Nathan looked at her.
Gabriel laughed.
“Why not?”
Evelyn lowered her weapon.
“Because he doesn't get to become you.”
Gabriel frowned.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at Nathan.
“He doesn't get to become another man who thinks power gives him the right to decide who lives.”
Nathan slowly lowered his weapon.
Gabriel's smile returned.
Then Evelyn pressed a button on the memory card.
Every light in the vault turned on.
A recording began.
Gabriel heard his own voice.
A recording from seventeen years earlier.
“Burn the house.”
His face went white.
Evelyn stared.
“You ordered it.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“Make sure the girls are separated.”
Another voice answered.
“What about Isabelle?”
Gabriel's voice replied:
“She knows too much.”
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“Marcus?”
“Let him believe he saved them.”
Gabriel stepped backward.
“No.”
“You created the story.”
Evelyn's voice was steady.
“You made everyone believe Victor was responsible.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
“You made my father believe he failed.”
“No.”
“You made my mother disappear.”
“No.”
“You made Nathan believe he was the hunter.”
Gabriel stared at her.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“And you made three little girls believe they had no family.”
Silence.
Gabriel's face collapsed.
For the first time, the man who had controlled everything looked powerless.
Evelyn raised the recording.
“It ends tonight.”
Gabriel whispered:
“You'll destroy the family.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward Nathan.
Then toward the doorway.
Her sisters appeared there.
Amelia.
Sophia.
Isabelle.
Marcus.
All of them.
Evelyn looked at her family.
“I'll rebuild it.”
Gabriel suddenly lunged.
Nathan tackled him.
They crashed against the stone floor.
Gabriel fought violently.
Nathan pinned his arm.
Federal agents rushed into the vault.
“Gabriel Cross!”
“Hands where we can see them!”
Gabriel stopped fighting.
He looked at Evelyn.
“You think this is over?”
Evelyn walked toward him.
“Yes.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You still don't know who your real father is.”
Evelyn stopped.
Gabriel whispered:
“Ask Isabelle.”
Evelyn turned.
Her mother stood silently at the entrance.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Mom?”
Isabelle's face was full of tears.
Nathan released Gabriel into the agents' custody.
Gabriel was dragged away.
But Evelyn couldn't move.
She looked at Isabelle.
“Tell me.”
Isabelle swallowed.
“Your biological father…”
Evelyn waited.
“…was not Marcus.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Amelia looked shocked.
Sophia stepped closer.
Nathan stared.
Evelyn felt her entire world shift again.
“Who was he?”
Isabelle took a trembling breath.
“The man who helped me escape.”
Evelyn's heart pounded.
“Thomas?”
“No.”
“Adrian?”
Isabelle shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Isabelle looked toward the vault.
Toward the old photograph.
Toward the man whose name had been erased from every record.
“The original owner of Blackthorn.”
Evelyn stared.
“My grandfather?”
“No.”
Isabelle whispered:
“His son.”
Silence.
Evelyn's face went pale.
“Then who is my father?”
Isabelle looked directly at her daughter.
“Victor Ashford.”
The room went completely silent.
Nathan's face changed.
Marcus looked horrified.
Amelia covered her mouth.
Sophia stared at Evelyn.
And somewhere upstairs, every television in Blackthorn suddenly turned on.
A live broadcast appeared.
Victor Ashford was sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Smiling.
Looking directly into the camera.
“Hello, Evelyn.”
Her blood turned cold.
Victor leaned toward the screen.
May you like
“I think it's time you met your father.”
