Chapter 4 - The Dinner

|

The food was brought out immediately by an older, silent waiter who never once made eye contact with Dante. I stared at the plate of handmade truffle ravioli, suddenly hyper-aware of the fact that this single meal likely cost more than my weekly groceries.

Dante sat across from me, his movements deliberate and unhurried. He didn't eat. He simply watched me.

“Why did you help me last night?” I finally asked, unable to handle the heavy silence any longer.

Dante took a slow sip of his whiskey. The pale scar through his left eyebrow shifted as his expression tightened.

“I despise men who use volume to compensate for their own weakness,” he said, his voice a low, vibrating hum in the empty restaurant. “Your ex-husband is a coward. He sought an audience to humiliate you because he is incapable of standing on his own.”

“You don’t know anything about my marriage,” I said defensively, though his words were terrifyingly accurate.

“I know enough,” Dante replied smoothly. “I know he broke you down until you believed you were invisible. I watched you for an hour before he walked into that ballroom, Emma. You move like someone who is constantly apologizing for taking up space.”

I dropped my fork. “If you brought me here to psychoanalyze me, I can leave.”

“I brought you here because when he grabbed your wrist, you didn't cry,” Dante said, leaning forward. The ambient candlelight caught the dangerous silver glint in his eyes. “You didn't break. You pulled your hand away and told him to go home. There is steel underneath all that quiet, Emma. I recognized it. Because I had to forge the exact same steel in myself.”

I swallowed hard, the intensity of his gaze making my skin flush. “And what does a mafia boss want with a catering waitress?”

Dante didn't flinch at the title. He didn't deny it.

“I want to know you,” he stated simply. “In my world, everyone wants something from me. Money. Power. Blood. You looked at me last night and only saw a stranger. I want to spend time with someone who isn't calculating my net worth or planning my funeral.”

“That’s an incredibly dangerous arrangement for me,” I whispered.

“I will protect you,” Dante promised, the words carrying the weight of an absolute vow.
