Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Chapter

I stood in the quiet grocery store parking lot, watching the red taillights of the silver sedan disappear into the thick autumn fog.
The night was quiet again. The ambient hum of the streetlights washed over the damp pavement, cold mist falling lightly against my face.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and unlocked the screen.
A new encrypted message was waiting in my inbox from Marcus:
“Daniel—Interpol just flagged an emergency flash alert on Vanguard Apex Capital. Someone in Europe just authorized a full asset liquidation. They’re running. What do you want us to do with the master ledger?”
I stared at the glowing screen for a long moment.
I looked down the quiet road toward the city where my daughter was sitting in her townhouse, safe, whole, and laughing with her friends, completely unaware of the heavy shadows that had briefly touched her world.
I tapped my thumb against the glass keyboard, drafting a reply to my former partner.
“Keep the ledger open,” I typed slowly. “The Whitmores were just the beginning.”
I slipped the phone back into my pocket, picked up my bag of groceries, and walked toward my old truck.
The war wasn't over. In my line of work, the shadows never truly disappear—they simply wait for someone to turn off the lights. But as I turned the key in the ignition and the old engine roared to life, a quiet smile touched my lips.

Let the shadows come.
I still knew exactly where to put the evidence.
