Chapter 15 - The Eviction

Eric looked like he was going to vomit. Gloria was staring at him, realizing that her golden boy’s entire financial facade was crumbling right in front of her.
“Claire, wait,” Eric stammered, raising his hands pacifyingly. “We can talk about this. We don’t need lawyers.”
“The time for talking ended when you let your mother bring a bucket of bleach into my home,” I said. I pointed to the door. “All three of you. Out. Now.”
“You can’t kick us out into a storm!” Brittany cried, gesturing to the sideways rain hammering the windows.
“Watch me.”
I pulled out my phone and dialed the building’s front desk. “Miguel? It’s Claire Bennett in penthouse 4. I have three unauthorized guests refusing to leave my property. Could you please come up with security to escort them out?”
Eric panicked. “Claire, this is my legal residence! You can’t legally evict me without thirty days' notice!”
“I’m not evicting you,” I replied calmly. “I’m removing your guests. Your mother and sister are not on the lease. As for you, you can stay and sleep in the guest room until the lawyers sort out your temporary occupancy. But if you try to stop security from removing them, I will file a restraining order.”
Within two minutes, the private elevator chimed. Miguel, the massive, no-nonsense head of security, stepped out with two other guards.
“Is there a problem, Ms. Bennett?” Miguel asked, taking in the soaked sofa and the dripping mother-in-law.
“These two women are leaving. Please assist them in packing their bags.”
Gloria tried to put on a show. “Help! She assaulted me! Call the cops!”
Miguel just stared at her. “Ma'am, if you’d like to call the police, you can do so from the lobby. Right now, you are trespassing. Pack your things.”
It was the most humiliating twenty minutes of Gloria’s life. Stripped of her power, she and Brittany hurriedly shoved their belongings into suitcases while security watched. Eric stood in the corner, silent and defeated.

At 8:15 PM, the elevator doors closed on Gloria and Brittany. I locked the deadbolt.
