Chapter 11 - The Interrogation Begins

|

After dessert, Margaret ushered everyone into the living room. She carried a tray of coffee and set it on the table in front of the glowing Christmas tree.

Daniel sank into the plush sofa, looking almost relaxed. He had survived the dinner. No one had thrown a glass of wine in his face. No one had screamed or called Vanessa a homewrecker. He clearly mistook our icy silence for acceptance.

Margaret poured a cup of black coffee and handed it to Vanessa with a polite smile.

“So, Vanessa,” Margaret said casually, taking a seat beside Robert. “How long exactly have you and Daniel been close again?”

Daniel stiffened immediately. He shot a warning look across the room. “Mom.”

“What?” Margaret asked innocently. “I’m just trying to get to know your friend.”

Vanessa held the warm coffee mug with both hands, using it as a shield. “We reconnected earlier this year, Mrs. Bennett.”

“Oh? How did that happen?”

“Through Facebook, actually. We were both part of a high school alumni planning group.”

Daniel glared at Vanessa, clearly wishing she would stop talking, but she was too nervous to pick up on his cues.

“I see,” Margaret nodded thoughtfully. “And when did you two finally meet up in person?”

Vanessa hesitated, her eyes darting to Daniel before answering. “Sometime in June.”

June. My anniversary month. The month Daniel had told me he was too swamped at work to plan a weekend getaway.

I kept my face perfectly still, taking a slow sip of my coffee.

“It wasn’t like that, Mom,” Daniel interrupted sharply, his voice rising in panic.

Margaret looked at her son with wide, innocent eyes. “Like what, Daniel? She simply answered a question about a timeline.”

Daniel realized he had just incriminated himself by acting defensive. He shut his mouth, but his knee began to bounce rapidly.

Robert leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “And after you met in June?”

“We just had coffee a few times,” Vanessa stammered, shrinking under the intense gaze of the former judge.

“And after coffee?” Margaret pressed smoothly.

“Lunch sometimes. Just catching up.”

Daniel suddenly stood up from the sofa. “Okay, this is getting ridiculous. You’re interrogating her. We’re leaving.”

I set my coffee mug down on the glass table with a sharp, definitive clink.

“Sit down, Daniel.”

Everyone in the room froze. Daniel stared at me in shock. In eleven years of marriage, I had never once ordered him to do anything using that tone of voice.

“Emily, I am not going to let them—”

“I said, sit down.”

Slowly, as if fighting an invisible force, Daniel sank back onto the sofa. The illusion of control he had clung to all week evaporated into the warm air of the living room.

I turned my attention completely to Vanessa.

“Did Daniel tell you we were separated, Vanessa?”
