Chapter 11 - The Forensic Audit

|

By Thursday morning, a team of federal forensic accountants from the Internal Revenue Service and state financial investigators had taken over the main executive offices of Vanguard Architects.

Boxes of hard files were being removed from the building under armed guard. Hard drives were being mirrored, and server logs were being analyzed line by line.

Inside the main conference room, Leah sat alongside Arthur Vance and Marcus Kane, reviewing the real-time findings of the audit team.

The lead auditor, a precise man named David Miller, set a thick digital tablet in front of us.

“Miss Sutton,” Miller said, pointing to a series of flagged transactions. “Your initial submission was astonishingly accurate, but our deep-packet inspection of Vanguard’s legacy servers revealed something even more severe.”

I leaned forward, my brow furrowing. “What did you find?”

“It turns out Eleanor Rhodess wasn't just siphoning your project royalties into the Cayman Islands,” Miller explained. “She was using Vanguard as a shell entity to clear bad debt from a failed real estate venture she managed in California fifteen years ago. She had accumulated over twelve million dollars in offshore liabilities.”

Arthur gasped softly. “She was using Leah’s designs to collateralize her private gambling debts and old real estate losses?”

“Precisely,” Miller nodded. “Julian Rhodess was fully aware of it. In fact, he signed off on three separate tax filings under penalty of perjury, claiming these offshore transfers were legitimate architectural consulting fees paid to foreign firms.”

Marcus Kane let out a low whistle. “That’s not just civil fraud anymore. That’s tax evasion, grand larceny, and felony bank fraud. The Department of Justice will be issuing formal indictments by the end of the week.”

I sat back in my chair, taking a slow, deep breath.

For six years, Eleanor had treated me like a charity case—a poor girl from a modest family who should be eternally grateful for the breadcrumbs thrown from her table. Yet all along, she was the parasite, feeding off my talent to pay for her secret, shameful failures.

“Where is Eleanor right now?” I asked Miller.

“She attempted to board a private charter flight to Vancouver this morning,” Miller replied with a tight smile. “Federal marshals intercepted her at the airport. She is currently being held at the federal holding facility downtown, pending a bail hearing.”
