Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

|

The panic room was suffocatingly dark and silent, perfectly insulated against the chaos outside. The only sound was the ragged, heavy breathing of Julian and me in the pitch black.

The emergency LED lights flickered on, casting a dim red glow over the tiny, reinforced steel bunker.

Julian slumped against the steel wall, sliding down to sit on the floor. He let out a long, heavy exhale, resting his head back against the metal. He was uninjured, but the adrenaline crash was visible on his face.

I sat beside him, my knees pulled tightly to my chest, my emerald gown torn and covered in dust.

“They can't get in here,” I whispered, staring at the heavy steel door. “It’s rated for explosives. The police will be here in less than ten minutes.”

“The syndicate doesn't care about the police, Claire,” Julian said quietly, checking his weapon in the red light. “They’ll burn the building down with us inside it if they have to.”

I closed my eyes, the weight of my own arrogance crushing me. I thought I had won. I thought I was the apex predator, completely unaware that there were monsters lurking in the deep that didn't play by corporate rules.

Ethan had used my own vengeance to sign my death warrant.

Suddenly, my cell phone, miraculously unbroken in my pocket, vibrated loudly.

I pulled it out. There was no service in the steel box, but the phone was connected to the building's internal emergency Wi-Fi network.

I had an encrypted video message. It was from Ethan.

With trembling hands, I tapped play.

The screen illuminated Ethan’s face. He looked bruised, terrified, and completely unhinged. He was sitting in a dark room, lit only by a single overhead bulb.

“You thought you were so smart, Claire,” Ethan whispered into the camera, a manic, broken smile on his face. “You took my money. You took my house. You humiliated my mother. You left me with nothing to lose.”

He leaned closer to the camera, his eyes wide and empty.

“I told them you orchestrated the fraud. I told them you stole their twenty million dollars to buy my company. They’re coming for you, Claire. And Julian can't protect you from the Chicago outfit. You’re going to give them back everything you took from me... or you’re going to die in that tower.”

The video ended. The screen went black.

I sat in the red emergency light of the panic room, trapped in a steel box forty floors above the city, listening to the muffled sounds of men outside trying to cut through the door.

My revenge was complete. But the real war had just begun.
