Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary

|

Amelia had always believed that a good diner smelled like forgiveness. At Castellano’s, that forgiveness smelled like dark roast coffee, sizzling bacon grease, and the sharp tang of lemon floor cleaner. For the past year, this small, unassuming restaurant in the heart of Brooklyn had been her entire world.

She loved the chipped ceramic mugs that had survived a thousand clumsy mornings. She loved the tired, predictable jokes from the regulars. Mr. Del Monaco, an eighty-year-old retired mechanic, always wanted extra gravy on his fries and decaf coffee that he swore he could tell apart from the regular. The trucker sitting at the end of the counter, a massive man named Tiny, always wanted his grilled cheese cut diagonally.

Ordinary things. For Amelia, ordinary had become precious.

She had arrived in Brooklyn twenty-nine years old, carrying a single canvas duffel bag, a crumpled bus ticket, and absolutely no intention of ever explaining either of them to anyone. Castellano’s had given her a job, a uniform, and a steady paycheck without ever demanding her story.

Tony, the heavy-set cook, called orders through the kitchen window in a booming, cheerful voice. Angela, the older waitress who had taken Amelia under her wing, constantly complained about Amelia skipping meals while simultaneously slipping hot buttered toast beside her station.

It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon when the brass bell above the front door jingled, signaling the end of her peace.

Derek Lawson walked in, bringing the bitter November chill with him. He was flanked by two friends who looked like they were entirely too used to getting their way. Derek wore an expensive leather jacket and a smile that Amelia instantly recognized. It was the kind of smile that belonged to a man who thought the world was a vending machine, and he had all the coins.

They slid into the corner booth, immediately loud, laughing at a joke that made Angela roll her eyes from behind the counter. Amelia grabbed a fresh pot of coffee and a menu, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. She didn't know it yet, but the sanctuary she had built was about to shatter.
