Chapter 13 - THE MOTHER CALLED LAURA MILESLeah Moreno agreed to meet Clara only after both women received separate attorneys.
The meeting took place through a secure video connection. Noah remained outside the camera frame because neither lawyer wanted his body used as proof before the adults established boundaries.
Leah wore hospital clothing and held a paper cup between both hands.
“I was told you and Daniel had created embryos but couldn’t carry safely,” she said.
“That wasn’t true.”
“I know now.”
“Did you choose to use your own egg?”
“No.”
The answer changed Noah’s biological history again.
New Beginnings told Leah she was carrying an embryo belonging entirely to the intended couple. Independent testing showed she was Noah’s genetic mother.
Her egg had been used without informed consent.
Daniel’s stored sample supplied the paternal genetics.
“I thought I was helping another woman become a mother,” Leah said.
Clara looked toward the empty bassinet beside her chair.
“You were helping me. You were also lied to.”
Leah’s mouth trembled.
“They gave me your picture. You were standing outside a bookstore.”
Clara remembered the day. She had been twenty weeks pregnant and believed Noah was already moving inside her.
Someone had photographed her without permission.
“They said you knew about me.”
“I didn’t.”
“They said you chose my medical plan.”
“I didn’t.”
“They said you wanted no contact after birth.”
Clara felt anger rise so quickly that her hands became cold.
She did not aim it at Leah.
“What did you want?”
“I wanted one photograph after delivery. They said the parents refused.”
Clara closed her eyes.
There was no version of the story in which every woman received what had been promised. Noah could not be returned to a moment before fraud placed competing truths around him.
Leah’s surrender document carried her signature.
She remembered signing forms after labor.
She had been bleeding and heavily medicated. The document she saw described temporary medical authority. The permanent surrender pages were added later.
No valid consent existed.
Legally, Leah might retain parental rights.
Clara’s fear became physical.
She looked toward Noah’s sleeping face outside the camera.
Leah noticed.
“I am not asking anyone to take him from you today.”
“Today?”
“I don’t know what I am asking.”
The honesty hurt less than a false promise.
Rachel interrupted gently.
“No permanent decisions are required during this meeting.”
Leah nodded.
“I want him safe while I understand what happened.”
“He is safe,” Clara said.
“I believe you.”
“That is not the same as giving up your rights.”
“No.”
Two mothers looked at each other across a screen designed to prevent either one from treating the other as an intruder.
Daniel sat with Clara but spoke only when Leah addressed him.
“Did you know your sample was being used?”
“No.”
“Do you want to be Noah’s father?”
“I already am.”
Leah’s face tightened.
Daniel corrected himself.
“I mean I have cared for him since birth and intend to continue. I understand that sentence does not decide what the court recognizes about you.”
“Thank you.”
The investigation reconstructed the beginning.
Evelyn referred Daniel and Clara to New Beginnings Medical Group after they struggled to conceive. The clinic collected Daniel’s sample lawfully for testing, then preserved it illegally.
Clara underwent a procedure described as uterine imaging. While sedated, Richard transferred an embryo created from Clara’s egg and his own genetic material.
Weeks later, Clara became pregnant and believed conception had occurred naturally.
At the same time, Leah was implanted with an embryo made from her egg and Daniel’s sample.
The network selected women with similar due dates and adjusted medications to align delivery windows.
Hospital records showed Richard moved both births into the same surgical suite.
Melissa Dane exchanged the infants.
Robert expected Daniel and Clara to return home with Noah, the biological male descendant required by the Carter trust.
Lucas would be transferred into another New Beginnings family.
Evelyn’s assignment was to weaken Clara, establish incapacity and take control of Noah’s household.
Clara’s collapse was not the beginning.
It was the final step of a plan lasting almost two years.
Rachel filed emergency parentage petitions for both infants. Leah received independent representation and access to Noah’s medical information.
The court prohibited Richard, Robert, Evelyn and every New Beginnings entity from controlling the children or reproductive records.
Noah remained with Clara and Daniel during review.
Lucas remained too.
Judge Miriam Ames explained that the order was temporary.
Clara hated the word.
She accepted that the judge could not promise a permanent answer before hearing Leah.
Outside the legal process, Rebecca gave police the computer she had used while investigating Richard.
It contained photographs of the fertility clinic’s storage room.
Rows of frozen material carried coded labels.

Five vials containing Daniel’s genetic material.
And seven transfer files showing his sample had already been used in pregnancies beyond Leah’s.
One file recorded a live birth six years earlier.
