Chapter 10: The Shattered Glass and the Siren's Song

The sudden arrival of the police froze the scene in a surreal tableau of violence and flashing lights. David stared at the front door, his finger hovering over the trigger. The absolute certainty in his eyes shattered, replaced by raw, unadulterated panic.
"How?" David whispered, his voice trembling. "The alarm didn't trip. No one called them."
Elena opened her eyes, a bruised, bloody smile spreading across her face. "I didn't call them, David. I called the silent panic alarm in your office. When I hit play on the computer, I hit the emergency button on your desk. The one you installed to keep the 'bad things' out."
David let out a primal roar of frustration. He raised the gun again, pointing it at Elena, completely losing whatever remaining sanity he possessed.
Before he could pull the trigger, the front door exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and metal. A tactical battering ram shattered the electronic lock, and four heavily armed SWAT officers poured into the foyer, their laser sights immediately converging on David's chest.
"Drop it! Drop the weapon now!" the lead officer screamed, his rifle trained perfectly on David’s head.
David hesitated. He looked at Elena, then at Sarah, and finally down at his ruined leg. The sociopathic mask slipped entirely, revealing the pathetic, broken coward underneath. He slowly released his grip on the gun, letting it clatter to the floor, and raised his hands.
"They attacked me!" David cried out, adopting a tone of desperate victimhood. "My wife is having a psychotic break! Her sister stabbed me! I was trying to protect my son!"
"Shut up and get on the ground!" the officer barked, kicking the gun away and driving his knee into David’s back, snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.
Paramedics rushed in right behind the tactical team. They immediately swarmed Sarah and Elena.
"We have a female, multiple lacerations, ruptured abdominal stitches, severe bleeding!" a medic shouted, applying a pressure dressing to Sarah's stomach. Another medic gently took the crying baby from Sarah's arms, checking Leo for injuries.
"My sister," Elena gasped, clutching her bleeding shoulder as a medic began to bandage it. "The folders... in my pants... they prove everything."
A detective in a trench coat walked over, pulling the blood-stained manila folders from Elena's waistband. He opened them, his eyes scanning the fake psychiatric reports and the massive life insurance policy. He looked down at David, who was currently whimpering on the floor, trying to convince the arresting officers of his innocence.
"Bag him," the detective ordered, his voice laced with absolute disgust. "Attempted murder, insurance fraud, kidnapping... he's never seeing the light of day again."
As they strapped Sarah to a stretcher, she reached out a weak, trembling hand. Elena grabbed it, squeezing tightly.
"You did it," Sarah whispered, a faint, genuine smile touching her pale lips. "You saved us, Elena."
"We saved each other," Elena replied, tears streaming down her face as she walked beside the stretcher out into the cool night air.
The front lawn was a sea of flashing lights, police cruisers, and an ambulance. Neighbors were standing on their porches in their pajamas, staring in shock at the spectacle unfolding at the pristine, perfect house of the neighborhood's most perfect couple.
They loaded Sarah into the back of the ambulance. A medic handed a quiet, sleeping Leo to Elena. The baby was completely unharmed, wrapping a tiny fist around Elena’s finger.
As the ambulance doors began to close, Elena looked back at the house. David was being dragged out in handcuffs, his face covered in blood and dust. He locked eyes with Elena one last time. There was no more charm. No more arrogance. Just the empty, hollow stare of a monster whose cage had finally been broken.
Elena turned away, climbing into the back of the ambulance beside her sister. The sirens began to wail, a loud, piercing song of survival that echoed through the dark streets, leaving the shattered mansion behind them.

The nightmare was over. But as Elena looked down at the tiny baby in her arms, a cold realization washed over her. David was a wealthy man. He had connections. And men like him didn't just give up their property willingly. He might be behind bars, but the war for Leo's future was only just beginning.
And next time, David wouldn't be working alone.
