Chapter 20 - The Open Door

|

I washed the blood off my knuckles at a gas station restroom sink on the drive back to the city. By the time I walked back into Wellington General Hospital, I was just David Miller again. A tired, worried father carrying two cups of bad cafeteria coffee.

I pushed open the door to Nora's room at exactly 11:45 p.m.

Maya was asleep in the visitor's chair, curled up under a blanket. Nora was awake, watching the door. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, and she gave me a weak wave.

I smiled warmly, setting the coffee down and taking my seat beside her bed. I had kept my promise. The bad men were going to prison, the corrupt empire was crumbling, and I hadn't lost my soul in the process.

For the first time in days, I felt like I could finally breathe.

Then, the heavy hospital door slowly swung open.

I expected to see a night nurse coming to check Nora's vitals. But the silhouette standing in the doorway was tall, wearing a sharply tailored, expensive gray suit.

Maya stirred and woke up, rubbing her eyes.

The man stepped into the dim light of the room. He had silver hair, cold, calculating blue eyes, and carried an aura of immense, crushing power.

Nora’s heart monitor immediately spiked, beeping rapidly. Maya gasped and scrambled backward in her chair.

I stood up instantly, placing myself directly between the man and my daughter’s bed. Every tactical instinct I possessed screamed that there was a deadly threat in the room.

“You must be Mr. Miller,” the man said smoothly, his voice cultured and dangerously calm.

“Who the hell are you?” I demanded, my hands balling into fists at my sides.

The man offered a chilling, polite smile. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a pristine white envelope, tossing it casually onto the tray table at the foot of Nora's bed.

“My name is Richard Caldwell,” the man said. “Preston’s father. And Eleanor’s son.”

I stared at him, my muscles coiling to strike. “If you take one more step toward my daughter, you won't walk out of this hospital.”

Richard Caldwell chuckled darkly, adjusting his silk tie.

“I didn't come here to hurt your daughter, Commander Vance,” Richard said, using my classified military name with terrifying ease.

My blood ran completely cold.

“I came here to thank her,” Richard continued, gesturing to the envelope. “My mother has controlled our family’s empire for far too long. Nora’s little investigation gave me the exact leverage I needed to force her into federal custody. I am taking control of Caldwell Banking tomorrow.”

He looked directly into my eyes, and the smirk vanished from his face, replaced by the lethal gaze of an apex predator.

“But if you think this ends with my mother taking the fall... you clearly don't understand how this city works.”
