Chapter 14 - The Bitter Truth

|

The luxurious honeymoon suite felt like a prison cell as I stared into my wife's furious, terrified eyes. The ocean breeze blowing through the open balcony doors suddenly felt freezing.

"I thought we were done with this," Mara whispered, her voice cracking as she threw the black velvet box onto the king-sized bed. The four silver pawns tumbled across the white sheets. "You looked me in the eyes at the altar today and promised that the shadows would never enter our home again. Was it all a lie, Julian?"

"No!" I stepped forward, grabbing her shoulders gently but firmly. "Mara, I meant every single word. I thought the past was dead and buried. I swear to you on our children's lives."

She wrenched herself out of my grip, pacing the floor like a caged lioness. "Then explain this! Explain who this man is and why he wants my babies!"

I closed my eyes, the weight of a thousand old sins crashing down on my shoulders. "Before I met you, before I started working for your father's company... I wasn't just a corporate fixer. I worked for an underground syndicate. We moved money. Billions of it. We laundered it for cartels, for corrupt politicians, for anyone who could pay our fee."

Mara stopped pacing, staring at me in horror. "Julian..."

"My boss was a man named Victor," I continued, forcing myself to look her in the eye. "He was a monster, Mara. When I realized what kind of life I was trapped in, I wanted out. But you don't just resign from a syndicate. So, I took something as insurance. I stole his digital ledger—the access codes to every offshore account he managed. Billions of dollars."

"You stole from the mob?" she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

"I used it to buy my freedom. I set up a trap in Vienna three years ago. I lured Victor and his top lieutenants to a warehouse and I blew it to the ground. I thought he was dead. I thought I had secured our future."

"But he's not dead," Mara said, looking at the silver pawns on the bed. "He's alive, and he found us."

"I won't let him near you," I promised, my voice rough with emotion. "I will handle this."

Mara’s fear suddenly hardened into something else. The softness of the bride disappeared, replaced by the fierce, unyielding protective instinct of a mother.

"No, Julian," she said, her green eyes blazing with a cold fire. "We are going to handle this. If this man thinks he can come for my children, he is going to learn exactly who he's messing with. Pack your bags. We're leaving tonight."
