Chương 7 - THE TRAP SPRINGS

By Friday morning, the air inside Ridgemont Academy was charged with venomous tension.

Karen stood in the middle of her fourth-grade classroom, packing her personal belongings into a cardboard grocery box.

Her brass desk lamp. Her set of wooden geometric shapes. The framed drawing of a blue whale Toby had made for her birthday.

The classroom door swung open, and Principal Gordon Pike stepped inside, followed by two armed uniform officers from the local municipal police department.

Behind them stood Bianca Lel, wearing a smug, triumphant grin, clutching an administrative incident clipboard.

"Officers," Pike said, pointing a dramatic finger at Karen’s cardboard box. "That is the suspect. And as you can see, she is already attempting to liquidate her classroom and flee the premises."

Karen stood frozen, clutching the wooden whale to her chest. "Are you insane? I’m packing my personal items! I was terminated yesterday!"

"And what about these, Miss Marsh?" Bianca sneered, stepping aside.

From the hallway, a security guard rolled in a gray metal janitor’s cart.

Tied beneath the bottom shelf, concealed inside a filthy canvas laundry sack, were sixteen pristine, shrink-wrapped Ridgemont Academy administrative tablets.

"Found thirty minutes ago in the custodial basement locker," Pike announced loudly, ensuring every teacher in the corridor heard him. "Registered under the custodial access code assigned to Teresa Rossi—the vagrant cleaner Miss Marsh brought onto this campus."

Karen's blood ran cold. "Teresa didn't take those! You planted them! She doesn't even know how to open the electronic storage lockers!"

"The cleaner has already been detained in the auxiliary boiler room," Pike said coldly. "And campus keycard logs show your credentials were used to bypass the technology wing doors at eleven o'clock last night."

"I was at Boston Children’s Hospital with my brother until midnight!" Karen screamed, tears of pure rage burning her eyes. "Call Dr. Shaw! Check the emergency room surveillance! You are manufacturing evidence to ruin an innocent woman's life!"

"You can tell that to the magistrate, Miss Marsh," the older police officer said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "Hands behind your back, please."

"Don't you dare touch her," a voice rang out.

The hallway fell dead silent.

Walking slowly through the doorway was Teresa.

She was still wearing her faded gray custodian uniform, her white hair tied back in its usual loose knot, her hands calloused and raw from scrubbing linoleum.

Pike scowled, turning on her. "How did you get out of the boiler room? Officers, arrest her as well! She is an accomplice!"

The younger officer stepped toward Teresa, reaching for his utility belt.

Teresa didn't flinch. She didn't cower. She simply stood in the center of the classroom, her spine straight as an iron rod, and looked at the two officers with eyes so fierce, so anciently command-hardened, that both men stopped dead in their tracks.

"Officer Higgins," Teresa said, her voice dropping with quiet, terrifying precision. "Officer Miller. Tell me... how is your captain, Patrick Callahan? Does his gout still bother him in the winter?"

The older officer, Higgins, blinked in complete confusion. "Excuse me? How do you know Captain Callahan?"

Teresa pulled a small, engraved silver business card case from the pocket of her janitor’s smock. She flicked it open with one thumb, pulled out a heavy black-and-gold card, and handed it to Higgins.

"Call him," Teresa said softly. "Dial his direct private extension. Tell him Teresa Baron is standing in Room 204 at Ridgemont Academy, and two of his patrolmen are threatening to put her in irons because a private school headmaster stole his own tablets for an insurance write-off."

The name *Baron* hung in the air like a live high-voltage wire.

Officer Higgins stared at the heavy card. His face transformed in real time from professional skepticism to absolute, bone-white horror.

"Baron?" Bianca scoffed, letting out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Gordon, don't let this senile old maid stall! Her name is Rossi! It's on her employment tax form! She’s a minimum-wage scrub!"

Officer Higgins ignored Bianca completely. His hands were trembling as he pulled his department radio from his shoulder.

"Dispatch," Higgins stammered into the mic, his voice cracking. "Patch me through to the Captain's private line. Code Priority Red. Now."

Pike looked between the trembling officer and the stoic cleaner, a faint knot of dread forming in his gut for the first time. "Officer Higgins, what is the meaning of this? I am the headmaster of this academy!"

"Shut up, Mr. Pike," Higgins whispered, his eyes glued to the floor. "Just... shut your mouth."

Thirty seconds later, Higgins pressed the radio to his ear, listened to two sentences, turned pale as paper, and snapped to rigid attention.

"Yes, Captain. Understood, sir. At once."

Higgins clicked the radio off, took a step back, and bowed his head slightly toward the woman in the gray uniform.

"Mrs. Baron," Higgins said, his voice shaking with absolute deference. "Captain Callahan extends his deepest apologies. Our department will not interfere further. We are withdrawing immediately."

"Wait!" Pike shrieked, his composure completely disintegrating. "You can't just leave! She’s a suspect!"

"Have a pleasant day, ma'am," Higgins said, grabbing his partner by the tactical vest and dragging him out of the room so fast their boots squeaked against the floor.

The classroom was paralyzed in deafening silence.

Bianca Lel stood with her mouth hanging open. Pike’s tie looked as though it were choking him.

Karen stood frozen, holding Toby's wooden whale, staring at the woman she had shared white rice with for two months.

"Teresa...?" Karen whispered, her voice trembling. "Who... who are you?"

Teresa looked at Karen, her face breaking into that same warm, motherly smile.

May you like

"I told you, child," Teresa said gently. "I'm Teresa. But tonight... you and I have a party to attend."
