Chapter 4 - The Chairman's Intervention

|

Rafe Santangelo stood in the aisle, the silence of the ballroom wrapping around him like a heavy cloak.

He didn't move toward his fiancée. He walked directly toward the kneeling maid.

Gideon Puit immediately stepped back, his hands raised submissively. "Chairman Santangelo, I apologize for the disruption. This employee was incredibly clumsy. I will have her removed from the floor."

"She didn't drop the glass, Gideon," Rafe said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that carried effortlessly across the silent room. "I saw Sabine throw it."

Sabine stiffened, a flicker of genuine panic replacing her arrogant fury.

"Rafe, darling," Sabine said smoothly, stepping around the table. "This girl is a stalker. She's been harassing my team for months. She intentionally spilled wine on my new collection."

Rafe didn't look at her. He stopped in front of Billy.

He looked down at the blood seeping from her palm onto the marble floor. The dark red wine stained her uniform, making her look like a casualty of war rather than a clumsy servant.

"Stand up," Rafe commanded softly.

Billy slowly pushed herself up, wincing as the glass shard ground deeper into her palm. She kept her eyes lowered, obeying the rules Puit had drilled into them, but her heart was hammering a frantic, victorious rhythm against her ribs.

The trap was officially sprung.

"Look at me," Rafe said.

Billy raised her head. She looked directly into the dark, terrifying eyes of the mafia boss. She didn't flinch. She didn't cry.

"What is your name?" Rafe asked.

"Billy Ror, sir."

Rafe’s brow furrowed slightly. The name clearly meant nothing to him. But the intense, burning defiance in her eyes meant everything.

He turned his gaze slowly to Sabine.

"You humiliated a woman who works in my hotel," Rafe stated, his voice devoid of any warmth. "You assaulted her in front of three hundred guests."

"She is a nobody, Rafe!" Sabine hissed, stepping closer, desperately trying to salvage her power. "She is a thief! Her sister tried to extort me five years ago!"

The entire ballroom inhaled sharply.

Billy’s breath hitched. Sabine had just confessed, on camera, that she knew Eleanor.
