Chapter 14 - The New Queen

|
The transition from staff to royalty happened overnight.
I did not return to the servant’s quarters. My meager belongings were moved into the master suite. The household staff, the same people who had gossiped about me weeks ago, now treated me with a terrifying level of absolute reverence.
The violent purge of the Vale family sent shockwaves through the entire eastern seaboard. The syndicate bosses quickly fell in line, realizing that Damian Bellucci was not weakened by his attachment to a civilian woman; he was fortified by it.
A month later, Damian and I were married in a small, fiercely guarded ceremony in the estate’s private chapel. Lily stood proudly as my flower girl, wearing a beautiful white dress that Damian had custom-ordered from Paris.
There were no executives. No fake smiles. Just the men who had bled to protect us.
“You are no longer a target,” Damian whispered as he slipped a massive diamond ring onto my finger. “You are the Queen. Untouchable.”
Our life settled into a beautiful, secure rhythm. Damian ruled the city with a newly legitimized front, moving the family’s assets out of the shadows. I managed the estate and directed millions of dollars into charitable foundations, ensuring no mother in the city had to struggle the way I had.
One evening, Damian and I sat on the terrace overlooking the vast gardens. Lily was running across the lawn, chasing a heavily armed guard who was happily pretending to be a monster, letting her win.
“She looks happy,” Damian murmured, pulling me against his side.
“She is,” I smiled, resting my head on his shoulder. “We both are.”
Everything was perfect. The enemies were buried. The kingdom was secure.
But as the sun dipped below the horizon, Enzo, the estate manager, stepped onto the terrace. He looked incredibly pale.
“Boss,” Enzo said, his voice trembling slightly. “A package arrived at the front gate. It bypassed all security scanners. It was left by a courier who vanished before the cameras could catch a face.”
Damian stood up, his relaxed demeanor instantly vanishing into lethal alertness. “Bring it here.”
Enzo handed him a small, simple wooden box.
Damian opened the lid.
Inside rested a single, scratched black flat shoe. Lily’s shoe from the night of the dinner party.
Tucked beneath the shoe was a handwritten note.
Damian pulled the note out, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line. He looked at me, a dangerous, apocalyptic fire burning in his gray eyes.
“What does it say?” I asked, my heart beginning to hammer a frantic rhythm.
Damian handed me the note.
Written in elegant, blood-red ink was a single sentence:

A king is only as strong as his weakest piece on the board. The game isn't over, Damian. See you soon. — M.
The war with Selene was over. But a ghost from Damian’s past had just stepped out of the shadows, and the real fight for our family was only just beginning.
