CHAPTER 4 — A YEAR LATER

CHAPTER 4 — A YEAR LATER
One year later...
The same maternity wing looked very different.
Dr. Evan Vale's portrait had disappeared from the lobby.
His name had been removed from every plaque.
The hospital board had created a permanent Domestic Violence Response Program.
Every employee received mandatory abuse-recognition training.
No physician—not even the Chief of Surgery—could override patient safety protocols again.
Mia walked through those same halls carrying her son while I held her daughter.
Neither child knew how close they had come to growing up without their mother.
Evan eventually stood trial.
The jury watched photographs of Mia's injuries.
They watched security footage.
They listened to nurses who had finally found the courage to tell the truth.
The verdict took less than three hours.
Guilty.
On every major count.
As deputies led him away in handcuffs, he looked toward Mia one final time.
She didn't cry.
She didn't speak.
She simply turned away and kissed both of her children.
Months later, we moved into a small house with a white porch and a maple tree in the front yard.
It wasn't a mansion.
It wasn't a penthouse.
But every room felt peaceful.
One evening, my grandson reached for Mia's face while his little sister laughed from her high chair.
"Mom," Mia whispered to me, smiling through happy tears, "I thought he controlled everything."
I looked around our home.
The children's laughter echoed through the kitchen.
Sunlight poured through the windows.
"No," I said.
"He only controlled people who were afraid."
"You stopped being afraid."
She nodded.
Outside, autumn leaves drifted across the yard.
Inside, two healthy babies laughed in their mother's arms.
May you like
And for the first time in a very long time...
The future belonged entirely to them.
