CHAPTER 11 — THE EXPIRED NAME
Scott sat in a nameless suburban coffee shop.
He was trying to negotiate a private loan with two former associates.
His suit was still perfectly tailored. His watch was still a limited edition.
But the way he leaned forward betrayed his desperation.
“You know me,” Scott said, his voice deep and smooth, trying to reclaim the aura of an heir. “My name is a guarantee. The Whitmore family always backs its agreements—”
“Scott.”
One of the men held up a hand. Cutting him off.
No deference.
Just exhaustion.
“The Whitmore family no longer exists on any financial documents.”
Scott froze.
“The trust system has been liquidated,” the man continued, taking a sip of his coffee. “You no longer have access to that capital flow. Your name right now... is just a name.”
Scott opened his mouth to argue.
He intended to use big words like litigation, injunction, restructuring.
But the other man had already stood up.
“Without the Whitmore fund, you bring no value to this deal. Sorry, Scott.”
They left.
Scott sat there alone.
He looked at his reflection in the window glass.
For forty years, he believed that his power came from his own talent and sharpness.
Today, the system had stripped away that mask.
May you like
He was not the creator of power. He was merely someone tolerated by it.
And now, that tolerance had ended.
