Chapter 10 - The Verdict

|

The revelation of the bribe was the final, devastating nail in the coffin.

The judge ordered an immediate recess, pulling the lawyers into chambers to discuss the bombshell testimony regarding witness tampering. The trial had spiraled from a simple assault case into a massive, multi-level criminal scandal for the Bradford family.

When court resumed the next day, the defense didn't even bother calling any witnesses. They rested their case, offering a weak closing argument about emotional distress and asking for leniency.

The jury deliberated for exactly forty-five minutes.

It was the fastest verdict the courthouse had seen in a decade.

Derek held my hand so tightly my fingers were numb as we stood to hear the verdict.

“We the jury, find the defendant, Evelyn Bradford, guilty on all counts of Aggravated Assault and Battery, and Child Endangerment,” the forewoman read clearly.

Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, a pathetic, broken sob escaping her lips. The untouchable matriarch was finally, officially a convicted felon.

The sentencing hearing was scheduled for two weeks later.

Because of the premeditated nature of the attack, the presence of a minor, and the aggravating factor of the attempted bribery by her husband, the judge was absolutely ruthless.

“Evelyn Bradford,” the judge stated, looking down from the bench with profound disgust. “You have demonstrated a shocking lack of remorse and a terrifying sense of entitlement. You used your wealth and status as weapons to humiliate and terrorize your own family.”

The judge slammed his gavel.

“I sentence you to eighteen months in a state correctional facility, to be followed by three years of supervised probation. You are also ordered to complete mandatory anger management counseling, and a permanent, five-year restraining order is granted to Annette Goodwin and her minor child.”

Evelyn shrieked, completely losing her aristocratic composure, thrashing against the bailiffs as they stepped forward to cuff her.

“No! You can't do this to me! I am a Bradford!” she screamed, her voice echoing shrilly through the courtroom. “Derek, help me! Tell them to stop!”

Derek didn't move. He stood beside me, his face carved from stone, watching the woman who raised him be dragged out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

“Derek!” she wailed one last time before the heavy wooden doors closed behind her.

The silence that followed was heavy, but it wasn't sad. It was the sound of a toxic dynasty completely collapsing under the weight of its own arrogance.

We walked out of the courthouse and into the bright spring sunshine. The reporters swarmed us, shouting questions, but Derek ignored them. He wrapped a protective arm around my shoulders, guiding me to our car.

As we drove away from the media circus, I leaned my head against the window, watching the city roll by. The war was officially over, and we had won.
