CHAPTER 13: The Attic Clearance

Healing required more than just new memories; it required the active dismantling of the old ones.

On a chilly Sunday in November, Danielle and Marcus stood at the base of the pull-down attic stairs. For years, the attic had served as a graveyard for David’s belongings—boxes of old clothes, college memorabilia, and the physical remnants of the life he had built on a foundation of lies.

"Are you sure you're ready to do this?" Marcus asked, pulling on a pair of work gloves.

Danielle tied her hair back into a tight ponytail. "I'm ready. I don't want his secrets taking up space over our heads anymore."

They spent five grueling hours sorting through the dusty cardboard boxes. Danielle was ruthless and methodical, creating three distinct piles in the driveway:

Attic Sorting Protocol:

  • To Donate: David's old winter coats, professional suits, and sporting equipment.

  • To Discard: Personal journals, old anniversary cards he had given Danielle, and any remnants of the secret phone he had used to orchestrate his double life.

  • To Keep: Only items that belonged solely to the girls—Mia’s baby clothes and Amara’s early childhood drawings that had somehow ended up mixed in the mess.

Near the end of the afternoon, Marcus pulled out a heavy wooden cigar box from the back corner. He opened it, his expression darkening. It was full of photographs from David’s affair—pictures of him with Amara's biological mother.

Marcus quietly tried to close the box and slide it into a trash bag, but Danielle caught his wrist.

"Wait," she said.

She took the box and looked at the photos. A year ago, these images would have sent her into a hyperventilating panic attack. Today, she just felt a dull, distant sadness for the absolute mess David had made of his life.

She took out the photos that contained baby pictures of Amara, setting them carefully aside to put in a special album for her daughter. The pictures of David and the other woman, she threw directly into the heavy-duty garbage bag.

"You're a strong woman, Dani," Marcus said, tying the garbage bag shut with definitive finality.

"I'm a free woman, Marcus," she corrected him.
