Chapter 19 - Blood and Confessions

The loft was dark, illuminated only by the streetlights filtering through the heavy blinds.
Victor carried me to the massive leather sofa, laying me down gently as if I were made of glass. His hands trembled as he brushed the hair from my face, his dark eyes searching mine for any sign of regret.
“Are you sure, Anna?” he whispered, his voice a gravelly rasp. “If you do this… if you choose me tonight, there is no going back. You are mine. In this life, and the next.”
I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down to me.
“I stopped running a long time ago, Victor,” I breathed against his lips.
The kiss was consuming. It was a release of all the tension, the fear, and the violence we had survived over the past month. Victor was a man of immense power, a king of the underworld, but with me, he was completely vulnerable.
He worshiped me. Every touch, every kiss was a silent vow of protection and devotion.
Later, wrapped in the heavy blankets, I lay resting against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart.
“What happens tomorrow?” I asked quietly into the dark.
Victor tightened his arm around my waist, kissing the top of my head.
“Tomorrow, Richard Caldwell will be indicted on federal racketeering charges based on evidence I anonymously provided to the FBI,” Victor said smoothly. “Ethan will rot in a prison hospital. The Caldwell name will be erased from this city.”
I closed my eyes, a sense of profound relief washing over me. The monsters who had tormented me were gone.
“And my mother?” I asked.
“She will be moved to the best private facility in Switzerland,” Victor promised. “Under a new name, with absolute security. You will never have to worry about a medical bill again.”
I tilted my head up to look at him. “You bought an entire city just to keep me safe.”
Victor smiled—a rare, genuine, devastating smile.

“I would buy the world if you asked for it, Anna.”
I rested my head back on his chest, feeling a strange, intoxicating peace. I had started as a broke waitress, humiliated on a marble floor. Now, I was the queen of a dark empire.
